Before players begin dealing their cards each player must place a mandatory bet called the blind bet or the bring-in. The player to the left of the dealer has the right to call the bet, and can raise it if they wish. If a player chooses to check, they are not required to bet at all.
When all the players have their cards and have made a decision whether to continue betting or not they will then look at their cards. If they raise their bet, it is called raising and they are able to continue to raise their bet as long as nobody else calls them.

The player with the highest poker hand wins the pot, which is the total amount of bets placed in one deal. There are some poker variants that require a blind bet which is placed before a player’s turn and is rotated around the table. Some poker games also have raises and checks, where players can say “raise” if they want to bet more than the person before them or “check” if they do not want to bet at all. Depending on the rules of the game there can be a maximum amount that a player is allowed to raise in any given deal.
