Poker, also called holdem, is one of several varieties of card games, including Caribbean stud poker, seven-card stud poker, and other card games. Poker is any of many of the variations of poker where players place wagers over which hand is most likely to be correct based on the rules of that game. Like holdem itself, poker was invented by an American named Billiard Frenchman Antony de L’Amour.
One variation of poker is straight flush poker. In this version, one may bet any amount of chips that one may have, up to the maximum that the chips may legally be invested in and may fold just before the pot is topped or before it is brought down to this maximum. Another variation is called low-low, because the player who has the most chips at the end of the game has the option of either raising or lowering their bets, just as in a high-low deal.
The most commonly known version of poker, five-card stud, pits two individuals against each other in hopes of producing the highest possible hand. One card is discarded, usually from the hand of the player with the highest possible hand. The remaining cards are turned up face down in the pot, and the person with the highest possible hand then makes a single wild card throw with all of their chips in the pot. If that hand wins, then the pot is reduced, and so forth.
Raising is a common strategy in five-card stud. It means to raise your hand so that your opponents have to spend more chips to help you win. This strategy can backfire, though, if you do not have the correct Raise strategy. For example, if a player has raised his hand to the maximum three times, then he will only have one left in the pot if he does not have a winning hand.
A player cannot re-raise once he has pushed his betting calls into the pot. The same is true for when a player bets out of the top hand or into the middle of the table. Poker tells often tell players to stop betting until they have gotten all their raises in. If this is ignored and a pot gets emptied before the player has all their raises in, then a player has just lost a lot of chips, without having beaten anyone yet.
Draw Poker is a variation of five-card stud where you draw poker hands instead of five cards. In draw poker, the player needs to get all his draws in by the end of the hand. They do not need to have the best five cards, although having the best cards is helpful. A player can have a draw poker bet after the flop, but before the turn. This makes a draw poker bet all the more possible.
